What Is Mean Roof Height ?

In layman’s terms, this is basically a 2 story house on stilts; or a 3 story house on the ground. If your house is taller than this please email Zeus Windows to address your order.

Please do NOT proceed unless you are sure your house is less than 40 feet mean roof height.

The taller your home the stronger the windows must be. If your home exceeds a 45 foot MRH (taller than 2 stories on stilts/pilings or 3 stories on the ground). Email Zeus for a custom Quote.

45 MRH = 3 stories or less.

25 MRH = 2 stories or less.

Location of Window

If the window you are replacing (or any portion of the window opening) is closer than 60 inches to the corner of a room, a SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) upgrade package is automatically added to that window. SentryGlas®Plus interlayer (SGP) for laminated impact resistant glazing is the latest innovation in DuPont’s family of glass lamination products. It extends the performance of laminated glass beyond current technologies. SentryGlas®Plus Interlayer offers five times the tear strength and 100 times the rigidity of conventional PVB interlayer. Because of its added strength, clarity durability, fabrication and installation ease, it is an excellent candidate for demanding applications in the architectural market place. On our Build Your Window system you will be asked if your window (or any portion of the window opening) is within (closer to) 60 inches from the corner of your home. Zeus Windows takes care of it from there. Most windstorm jurisdictions require a stronger window less than 60 inches from the corner of a room.

If any portion of a window opening is within (closer to) 60 inches from a corner in your home, please check the “yes” box under “window location” on the “Build Your Windows” section. This window will be upgraded with a “SGP” package to strengthen the design pressure necessary to pass inspection.

Design Pressure (DP)

A strength rating of a hurricane window. It is the wind load or structural capacity a window or door can withstand. The higher the number, the stronger the wind load can be deflected. Zeus restricts the size of our windows to ensure the strongest, qualifying hurricane window on the market.

There are a few simple items you need to determine to ensure your windows meet local windstorm requirements.

For Florida and Louisiana Residents: A rule of thumb, once you locate your county or parish by the height of your home, if the DP requirement is 55 or higher, please email Zeus and we will give you a custom quote. Include your state and county/parish, height of your home (1-3 stories with or without pilings), the measurements of your windows, and denote/highlight with a * each window (if any) that is closer to 60 inches of the corner of the home.

Florida

There is a requirement regarding “distance from a large body of water” in addition to the height of your home and the proximity of the window to a corner in the home
Exposure “C” = The home is further than 1 mile from a large body of water.
Exposure “D” = The home is closer than 1 mile to a large body of water.
If you are on the borderline of 1 mile, go with “Exposure D” to be safe!!

Texas Residents

Make sure your home is less than 45 feet MRH (less than 2 stories on stilts/piling, or less than 3 stories on the ground). The “seaward” region is the strictest followed by “Inland 1.” All Zeus Windows offered will pass the Texas Department of Insurance inspection.

Additional Instructions

The 1st chart titled Florida Wind Speed by County (45 ft MRH) is explained as follows:
– “MRH” stands for Mean Roof height
– Exposure “C” means further than 1 mile from a large body of water.
– Exposure “D” means 1 mile or closer to a large body of water.
– Zone 4 assumes NONE of the window opening within (closer to) 60 inches of the corner the home.
– Zone 5 assume ANY of the window opening within (closer to) 60 inches of the corner of the home.
As you can see from the chart and the DP ratings of the Zeus hurricane/impact window, you can order any window style online if you are in a county from 120 to 130 MPH max wind speed rating regardless if you are in Exposure C or D or if the window is located in a Zone 4 or 5.
The max DP requirement is 45 for counties in the 120 mph to 130 mph ratings, and ALL of our windows are rated 50+.
– If you are in Exposure C you can order any window up to the max wind speed rating of 150 MPH, ignoring Zone 4 or 5 (window location from the corner of the room).
– If you are in Exposure C and all of your windows are Zone 4 (further than 60 inches from the corner of the room), the Zeus windows qualify all the way 160 MPH!
The 2nd PDF titled Florida Wind Speed by County (25 MRH) covers homes that are basically 2 stories on the ground or 1 story homes on pilings/stilts. The Zeus hurricane window will meet/exceed requirements for ALL homes up to and including the 140 MPH max wind speed rating.
For homes in Exposure “C” (further than 1 mile from a large body of water, the 160 MPH max wind speed category can be serviced as well with Zeus online ordering.
Further, if your order is entirely double hung operator windows AND your home is in Exposure C AND all of the windows are NOT closer than 60 inches from the corner of your home, you can order online with Zeus all the way to 180 MPH max speed rating!
Zeus Windows has compiled windstorm requirements for Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, which no other online hurricane window company has done. This took months to develop and then each Zeus window is restricted in size to meet a minimum 50DP rating. Zeus can build bigger windows (and will do so for customers not directly on the coast buying hurricane windows for theft deterrence and energy efficiency). Louisiana has restrictions on height of home and location of window to the corner of the home while Florida has the same restrictions plus proximity to a larger body of water (less than or more than 1 mile from the home). By freely posting this information on the Zeus website, the customer can locate the county or parish the home is located in and easily determine what minimum DP rating they need. The Zeus website is programmed to reject excess width or height entries to ensure you get a window that meets the local restrictions.

The 1st PDF below titled Louisiana Wind Speed by Parish (45 ft MRH) shows the DP ratings based on where the window is located. “MRH” stands for Mean Roof Height and this is basically a 3 story home on the ground or a 2 story home on pilings or stilts.
Zone 4 assumes NONE of the window opening within (closer to) 60 inches of the corner of the home and Zone 5 assume ANY of window opening is within (closer to) 60 inches of the corner of the home.
90 to 110 MPH max wind speed parishes can order ANY Zeus hurricane/impact window. 110 to 120 MPH max wind speed parishes can order ANY Zeus hurricane/impact window provided all of those windows are further than 60 inches from the corner of the home (Zone 4).
The 7 parishes in the 130 MPH max wind speed category can mostly be covered by a Zeus hurricane window provided an upgrade to window strength; please email for a custom quote.
The 2nd PDF titled Louisiana Wind Speed by Parish (25 MRH) is for homes basically 2 stories in height on the ground OR 1 story homes on pilings/stilts. Again, “MRH” stands for Mean Roof Height.
If your home falls into this category, your can order Zeus hurricane windows online from 90 MPH to 120 MPH.
If ALL of your windows are further than 60 inches from the corner of your home you can order up to the 130 MPH max wind speed zone.
If you are in a 130 MPH max wind speed zone AND any of your windows are within 60 inches from the corner of the home, email Zeus and an upgrade to window strength can handle those windows as well.

Testimonials

  • I live in Austin and thieves broke through french doors at my home. I thought they were secure! I bought a Zeus hurricane sliding glass door to keep robbers out. The Zeus online system is great, I even ordered 6 hurricane windows for the front of my house facing a freeway and train track to reduce noise. Ordering was a breeze, got an installer no problem. Zeus beat local Austin window/door companies by over 55%. No traffic/train noise and even in direct sun the Zeus inside panes stay cool! Really happy here
